AI agents and agentic AI: what changes?
Distinguish an individual agent from a broader workflow that plans and uses tools.
Agent and workflow
An AI agent is often the individual worker: a role, instructions, context and tool access. Agentic AI is the broader approach of using model-directed actions to carry out a task. The same application can contain one agent or several collaborating workers.
More agents are not always better
A second specialist helps when the work has a clear handoff, such as research followed by editing. Splitting a small task across many agents can add conflicting assumptions and repeated work. Start with one worker and add another only when its contribution is easy to judge.
Test the handoff
State what the first agent should deliver and what the next should verify. A research handoff might contain source links, quotes and open questions; an editor should check these before writing. Keep the human review point explicit.
