Codex vs Claude Code

Codex and Claude Code are software development agents from OpenAI and Anthropic. OpenAI presents Codex for end-to-end software tasks; Anthropic documents Claude Code through terminal and editor workflows, including features for more autonomous work. Compare them on your own repository rather than relying on broad rankings.

Inspect the workflow, not only the model

Codex is worth evaluating if your team works in OpenAI’s current coding app, IDE or CLI surfaces. Claude Code may suit developers who prefer Anthropic’s terminal-oriented and editor workflows. Product capabilities, model access and terms change; check official docs before standardizing. Watch how each gathers context, asks clarifying questions, presents tool permissions and exposes its final diff.

Example: migrate a small module

Choose a contained module with tests. Ask each agent to plan, implement, run relevant checks and list unresolved risks. Review the diff yourself and rerun tests in a clean environment. Compare compatibility handling, whether unrelated files changed, and whether the agent reports evidence or merely says the task is complete.

Choose for your team

The better fit is the one your developers can inspect and correct consistently. Test an ambiguous edge case to see whether it asks instead of guessing. Confirm usage limits and enterprise controls in official product material; don’t infer them from older comparisons.

Repeat the trial on a second task with different repository conventions. A single patch can reward luck; consistent adherence to local patterns and reliable test reporting are more useful signals for a team decision.
