Best AI agent apps: how to choose
There is no single best AI agent app for every task. Coding agents work against repositories; desktop agents work across files; messaging assistants act through chat; self-hosted agents require the operator to manage infrastructure. Start with a job and compare candidates on that job.
Match category to work
For repository changes, compare Codex, Claude Code, Cursor Agent or Devin on your stack. For file-based knowledge work, examine Claude Cowork or Manus and verify connectors and output formats. For a personal background assistant, compare Dots or Meta Muse based on availability and app permissions. OpenClaw and Hermes suit users willing to manage runtime choices; Paperclip focuses on organizational agent control. Suparagent offers a browser workspace for named agents, rooms and routines.
Use the same task as a test
Choose a bounded task—summarize project updates, patch a test repository or reconcile a small spreadsheet—and give each candidate the same input and definition of done. Verify the result independently, note setup and permissions, and inspect returned evidence. Include a missing-source or unclear-instruction case to see whether the agent guesses or asks.
Compare operating burden
Ask who maintains the runtime, which accounts pay for models, what context persists, how access is revoked, and whether actions can be paused or undone. Suparagent is open to sign up and requires a Boat sandbox key and user AI account. Avoid ranking by feature count or broad privacy claims; consult current official terms and docs.
A short scorecard can include task success, correction time, setup effort, permission clarity, and the quality of evidence. Weight these according to the risk and frequency of the job rather than giving every criterion equal importance.
